Governor Greg Abbott today announced that his call to prohibit local and state government from using taxpayer dollars to fund abortion providers is generating growing support across Texas. Prohibiting taxpayer funding of abortion providers and their affiliates is part of the Governor’s 20-item agenda for the ongoing special legislative session.

AUSTIN – Governor Greg Abbott today announced that his call for pro-life insurance reform is generating growing support across Texas. Pro-life insurance reform is part of the Governor’s 20-item agenda for the ongoing special legislative session.

As special session gets under way today for Texas lawmakers, and several pro-life issues are on the docket.
In early June, Governor Greg Abbott called the session specifically to consider 20 items – among them several education-related bills, the controversial privacy measure, and a few pro-life issues. Dr. Joe Pojman of the Texas Alliance for Life describes one pro-life proposal that will be dealt with.
“He has asked the legislature to consider continuing to defund Planned Parenthood in law,” Pojman explains, “and that would apply not just to the state government but to the counties and the cities as well.”

But Joe Pojman, the executive director of Texas Alliance for Life, said the new reporting requirements are inadequate. Along with the governor, he wants to see that data-collection system expanded to include reporting for complications during an abortion.
“This bill would simply require hospitals who treat a woman for an abortion complication or … the physician who performs an abortion and causes a complication … to report that to the state,” he said.
Pojman said he suspects that abortion complications are being underreported and this would allow the state to get a sense of whether there are problems.
“It may be that the number of complications is sufficient to increase the safety standards of abortion facilities,” he said. “If so, this law should tell us that.”

Pojman argued anyone who pays insurance premiums is paying into a system that covers other people’s abortions.
“This is about the State of Texas protecting individuals from having to fund abortions for someone else through their health insurance premiums,” he said.
