Hutchison Once Again Stands by Roe v. Wade and Legalized Abortion

1/29/10 -- In the second Republican gubernatorial debate, Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison was once again asked explicitly whether she supported the overturning of Roe v. Wade, the Supreme Court decision that legalized abortion. She answered, "No."

"At the gubernatorial debate, Senator Hutchison contradicted herself. You cannot be pro-life and support Roe v. Wade," says Joe Pojman, Ph.D., executive director of Texas Alliance for Life. In 2003, Hutchison showed her support for legalized abortion by voting for a resolution that stated, "It is the sense of the Senate that the decision of the Supreme Court in Roe v. Wade was appropriate and secures an important constitutional right; and such decision should not be overturned." (See Senate Roll Call No. 48, 108th Congress, 1st Session.)

Gov. Rick Perry, on the other hand, is on the record as both supporting limits on abortion and supporting overturning Roe v. Wade.

Texas Legislators Call for Prosecution for 14th Fort Hood Victim, an Unborn Child

1/11/10 -- Citing Texas' personhood law, 31 members of the Texas Legislature wrote a poignant letter to the Secretary of the Army calling for the prosecution of Maj. Nadal Malik Hasan for the murder of an unborn child, the 14th victim of the Nov. 5, 2009, shootings at Fort Hood.

One of the other 13 victims, Pvt. Francheska Velez, was pregnant at the time of the shootings. The Unborn Victims of Violence Act, signed by President George W. Bush in 2004, created a crime in military law and other federal laws for killing an unborn child while killing the mother.

The letter, sent by the Texas Conservative Coalition, points out that prosecution would be consistent with Texas' law that recognizes the personhood of the unborn child.

Campaign Continues to Remove Abortion from National Health Care Insurance Plan

12/22/09 -- On Dec. 21, 60 members of the U.S. Senate voted to stop debate on Majority Leader Harry Reid's "manager's amendment" to his national health care insurance plan, including a provision requiring federal funding for elective abortion.

The Senate is expected to give final passage to the bill shortly before Christmas after two or three more procedural votes. That paves the way for a Senate-House conference committee to attempt to iron out differences with the version passed by the U.S. House in October. Unlike the pro-abortion version in the Senate, the House's version contains the pro-life Stupak-Pitts Amendment to prevent funding for abortion.

The bill that emerges from the conference committee will likely mandate funding for elective abortion because President Obama, Majority Leader Reid, and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi all oppose the pro-life Stupak-Pitts Amendment. If that is the case, Texas Alliance for Life will vigorously oppose the bill's final passage in the Senate and House.

TAL is already preparing for a campaign to urge pro-life Texans in key districts to contact their U.S. representative to oppose any bill that does not explicitly exclude federal funds for elective abortions. Read more...
